In my last company-wide deployment of the Windows 10/11 22H2 feature update, I had this strange issue where a very small percentage of devices failed to upgrade. I recently wrote about how I do Feature Upgrades at my organisation and in that post, I describe how I use dynamic groups to ensure that all of my devices have the required feature update profile assigned. However a very small number of devices persisted in not having the recent Feature Upgrade offered to them. I spent many hours looking at data in the Windows Update for Business Workbook in Azure monitoring as…

How I Feature Update Windows
It’s been a few weeks since 22H2 has been released for both Windows 10 and Window 11, and after validation by both my Windows Insiders and my early adopters, I am ready to deploy this Feature Update to all of my managed Windows devices at work. I thought it could be useful to blog about how I do Feature Updates using Intune and Windows Update for Business Deployment Services taking advantage of the Intelligent Rollout feature. I can cover how I set up my Windows Insider for Business rings in a later blog post if that also interests anyone. For…
The new Quick Assist… Not quite ready for Prime Time
So this weekend, I sat down knowing I needed to blog. It has been almost EIGHT weeks since I’ve written one, and that’s really too long. I have a few draft blogs which are starting to take the form of a series that my friend MVP Darrell Webster helped name “How I stay Intune”, but the last few months have been very busy (Work, home life – I’m a 100% single parent) and burn out is becoming a very real reality for me right now. So after seeing that Microsoft had released a new version of Quick Assist, and reading…
Ensuring the Device Name for Windows Intune managed devices is set to Serial Number
A while ago, I wrote a blog around Restricting the Local Admin group with Intune. In that blog, I mentioned some scenarios where certain Windows Autopilot configurations may not have worked correctly for one reason or another. That blog focused on the Local Admins group, but I did note the device Computer Name, so I thought I would follow up with a blog on this. I have mentioned in a past blog that I am a fan of using the serial number of a device as its Device Name in Intune. The Windows Autopilot deployment Profile is a great and simple…
2021 Daylight Savings change in Fiji – Update (and fix for Microsoft Teams)
***2022 Update*** The Fijian Government have suspended Daylight Savings in Fiji in 2022 – The information provided in this post was thought to be able to be reused for 2022, however reports of Teams and Outlook calendars being incorrect by one hour showed that this workaround is no longer valid. The original post to keep the timezone set to Fiji but set the Adjust for daylight savings time automatically toggle setting to off has been tested and appears to be working. In a previous blog, I wrote about how to implement the Microsoft recommended mitigation for the 2021 change to…
2021 Daylight Savings change in Fiji
I work at a company which is New Zealand based, but also has offices and people in eight Pacific Island countries, one of these being Fiji. I was recently made aware of a change to Fiji’s Daylight Savings in 2021 – in a nutshell, the Fijian government has decided to put Daylight Savings on hold for 2021-22. Normally, Microsoft would issue an update for Windows but due to the insufficient time available, a patch is unlikely to be released before the original start of daylight savings on 14 November 2021. This means that Windows devices in the Fijian time zone…
Using Intune Win32 Apps instead of Intune PowerShell Scripts
Update – 28 November 2022 – Check out this blog for a for another approach to do this using the Proactive Remediation feature (The example used in that blog is removing the Windows 11 built in Teams app). I am in the process of switching a number of my Win32 apps to proactive remediations now. Sometimes, you just need to deploy a one off setting or configuration quickly, and the Intune PowerShell feature can be very handy to do this. I have used this a lot to run PowerShell scripts on my managed Windows 10 and 11 Endpoints to do…
Upgrade to Windows 11 using Feature Updates in Intune
Today marks the General Availability of Windows 11. Along with this there is an update to the Feature updates for Windows 10 and later (Preview) feature in Intune to assist with upgrading Intune managed devices to Window 11. I have previously used the Feature Updates feature to control deployment of Feature Updates outside of my Windows Insider for Business channels Before I get into how I have configured this for Windows 11, it may be useful to see how I have done this previously for Windows 10. Below I have two Feature Update profiles. Win 10 – Feature Updates Deployment…
Configuring the Windows 11 Start Menu Layout and Taskbar with Intune
The Windows 11 Start Menu Layout is one of the most noticeable features that is different from its Windows 10 predecessor, so therefore it would also make sense that configurations set in in Intune for the Windows 10 Start layout will not work on Windows 11 Microsoft have released some information on how to configure the Windows 11 start layout using Intune, so I thought that I would detail what I have done with configuring both the Windows 11 Start Layout and Windows 11 Taskbar using Intune. Windows 11 Start Layout To create a Windows 11 Start Layout and deploy…
Restricting the Local Admins group – Intune
Sometimes, a device that should be onboarded with Autopilot, doesn’t get onboarded with Autopilot – for example, I recently uploaded the hardware hashes for several hundred devices provided by a hardware vendor. The majority of these devices kicked into Windows Autopilot and onboarded with the appropriate Deployment Profile assigned. But I noticed that a very small number of devices did not onboard correctly, and while this isn’t a huge issue for the user, there were a few things that could cause an issue – two immediately spring to mind The computer name is randomly generated instead of having the computer…
